Welcoming a new baby into the family is an exciting time, and involving your older children in the process can help them feel included and help them process their emotions. One of the best ways to do this is through crafting. Newborn-themed crafts are not only fun but also a meaningful way to bond and foster creativity. As a parent, I’ve found that these activities help older siblings feel connected to their new baby and engaged in the preparation process. Here are some easy and fun projects to try with toddlers and preschoolers as you get ready for the big arrival.
Family Portrait
Creating a family portrait is a beautiful way to involve your child in recognizing their role as part of the growing family. Gather some colorful paper, markers, and crayons, and encourage your little one to draw their version of the family. They can draw the new baby, mom, dad, siblings, and even pets. If they’re not into drawing, you can also make this a collage project with family photos. This keepsake will remind everyone of the love and connection that makes your family so special.
Wind Chimes
Wind chimes are a fun way to bring a little bit of nature into your home, and they can be a lovely addition to the nursery. With some basic craft supplies like string, beads, bells, or even small spoons, your child can create their wind chime. Allow them to decorate the items however they like and help them string it all together. Hang it in the baby’s room or a favorite outdoor spot as a reminder of your child’s creativity and excitement for their new sibling.
Egg Carton Flowers
Egg cartons are an easy and budget-friendly material for crafting. Help your little one cut the egg carton into individual cups, then let them paint or color each cup to make flowers. You can add pipe cleaners for stems or construction paper for leaves. This is a simple but sweet way for toddlers and preschoolers to celebrate the new baby’s arrival, and the finished flowers can be used as decorations in the baby’s nursery or around the house.
Leaf Prints
Nature-inspired crafts are always a hit with little ones, and leaf prints are no exception. Take a walk outside to collect different types of leaves. Once home, use paint to brush the back of the leaves and then press them onto a piece of paper to create beautiful leaf prints. Toddlers will enjoy seeing the different textures and shapes of the leaves, and the prints can be framed or turned into cards for the new baby.
Baby Mobile
Creating a baby mobile together is a great way for your child to feel involved in preparing for the new sibling. Use lightweight materials like paper, felt, or even lightweight cardboard. Encourage your little one to create fun shapes like stars, animals, or hearts, and decorate them with paint, stickers, or markers. Once the pieces are finished, help them hang them from a coat hanger or embroidery hoop to create a personalized baby mobile. This will be a cherished addition to the nursery, showcasing your child’s creativity.
These newborn-themed crafts offer great opportunities for bonding, creative expression, and excitement as you prepare to welcome a new family member. Involving toddlers and preschoolers in these projects helps them feel included in the journey, fostering a sense of belonging and love.
