If you're pregnant or postpartum and exploring how cannabis might support you, you’ve probably heard a lot about CBD and THC—and maybe just as much conflicting advice about them.
Let’s slow it down. No judgment. No fear-based messaging. Just an honest look at the differences between CBD and THC, and how they might show up in your perinatal journey.
What’s the Difference?
Both CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are cannabinoids—active compounds found in the cannabis plant. But they interact with the body in different ways.
🌿 THC is the one most people associate with feeling “high.” It binds directly to receptors in the brain and body, which can create feelings of euphoria, altered perception, increased appetite, or deep relaxation.
🌿 CBD doesn’t cause a high. It works more subtly, often balancing the effects of THC, easing inflammation, and supporting emotional regulation.
Why Does It Matter During Pregnancy?
During pregnancy, people may consider using cannabis for things like morning sickness, anxiety, pain, or insomnia. And while research is still developing, what we do know is that:
💬 THC crosses the placenta. This is one of the reasons mainstream providers tend to strongly caution against cannabis use during pregnancy. Some studies suggest a possible link between prenatal THC exposure and low birth weight or developmental changes—though many of these studies don’t account for other factors like stress, nutrition, or alcohol use.
💬 CBD appears to be less risky, but there’s still limited research on its use during pregnancy. What’s promising is that it may support nausea, anxiety, and inflammation without the psychoactive effects of THC. But again—"natural" doesn't always mean risk-free, especially with dosage and quality inconsistencies.
A Harm Reduction Approach
If you’re already using cannabis or considering it, here’s what I encourage folks to explore:
✔️ Know your why. Are you trying to sleep? Ease anxiety? Stop vomiting? The “why” can guide the safest, most effective form and dosage.
✔️ Start low, go slow. Especially with THC. Microdosing or leaning toward CBD-dominant products may be a more balanced way to find relief.
✔️ Prioritize clean sourcing. Look for lab-tested products with clear cannabinoid and terpene profiles. Avoid synthetic cannabinoids and mystery edibles.
✔️ Consider non-inhaled methods. Tinctures, topicals, and edibles may reduce exposure to combustion and toxins from smoking.
Postpartum Considerations
The postpartum period can be incredibly raw. Sleep deprivation, hormonal shifts, mental health struggles, pain—it's a lot.
🌙 CBD may help support rest, mood stability, and recovery without clouding your ability to care for your baby.
🌿 THC might offer deeper relaxation or appetite support, but it can also increase anxiety or disconnection in some people—especially in higher doses.
If you're breastfeeding, both THC and CBD can pass into breast milk in small amounts. More on that here if you want a full breakdown.
You Deserve Nonjudgmental Support
No one should have to choose between their wellness and their dignity. If cannabis is part of your story—whether daily, occasionally, or just something you're curious about—you deserve care rooted in truth, not shame.
As a cannabis-informed doula, I walk with you through those questions and decisions. You don’t have to figure it out alone.
