Cannabis in pregnancy is a complex, personal choice, and parents-to-be are often left to sift through a mix of information and stigma. As a doula, I offer compassionate support and share resources so families feel empowered and informed on their unique journey. Here, I’d like to share some perspectives, considerations, and ways to approach this topic confidently and cautiously.

The Current Landscape of Cannabis and Pregnancy

Cannabis has been used across cultures for centuries, but here in the U.S., studies on its safety in pregnancy are still limited. Since cannabis is federally classified as a Schedule I substance, it’s challenging to conduct thorough, controlled studies. So, much of the information available comes from personal experiences rather than formal studies. This makes each individual’s choice around cannabis unique and based on what feels right for them.

If you’re considering using cannabis to help manage symptoms like nausea or anxiety, it can be useful to learn about how it interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS helps balance various functions like mood, appetite, and pain. CBD and THC affect the ECS differently, so understanding these options can be a first step in considering what’s best for you.

Symptom Relief Considerations

Many pregnant individuals report relief from symptoms like nausea or anxiety through cannabis use. It’s important to remember that research on this is limited, and each person’s experience will differ. If you’re exploring this option, speaking with knowledgeable providers and gathering up-to-date resources can make a big difference. Some clients also find non-psychoactive products, like CBD topicals, helpful for localized relief.

Talking with Your Healthcare Provider

Discussing cannabis with healthcare providers can feel intimidating—especially given its stigma—but finding a supportive provider can be invaluable. A provider familiar with cannabis and its effects can offer guidance that respects your choices and addresses any questions you have. If you’re seeking someone open to discussing cannabis, some networks and communities connect people with cannabis-positive providers, which can be helpful resources.

Legal Considerations with CPS

Even in states where cannabis is legal, it’s wise to know your local laws around prenatal use, as CPS may still investigate prenatal cannabis use based on state regulations. If you’re in an area where this is a concern, it’s worth familiarizing yourself with your rights and the potential for CPS involvement.

Moving Forward with Care and Confidence

The choice to use cannabis in pregnancy is deeply personal. My role as a doula is to support your path, helping you find information, consider options, and feel empowered in the decisions you make. Pregnancy and postpartum can bring many challenges, and if cannabis is something you’re considering as part of your care, know that you have options and a space to explore what feels right for you.
